DATTER (daa·tr)
Founded by Marilynn Lerum and Jennifer Nielsen, DATTER was born out of a deep desire to create meaningful experiences while making space for family.
DATTER, meaning “daughter” in Danish and Norwegian, is a nod to the designers’ shared Scandinavian roots and their shared story of stepping away from large studios to spend more time with their girls.
Marilynn’s architectural precision and background in boutique hospitality as the Design Director for Palisociety, inform a meticulous, narrative-driven approach. Her skillset extends beyond design, helping clients shape the whole guest experience. From uniforms to service flow, she ensures every touchpoint feels cohesive and intentional, bringing the hotel alive. Through years of working with one of the leading hospitality operators, Marilynn brings a depth of experience and network of collaborators.
Jennifer’s foundation in brand interior design, working with Marriott and Hilton, brings a deep understanding of what makes guest experiences seamless. After transitioning to the California coast and joining Studio Collective, Jennifer deepened her craft in boutique hospitality design—sharpening her eye and evolving a sensibility that balances structure with soul and intention.
Their new chapter became DATTER — a practice built on craft, collaboration, and care. Together, they design spaces that are inviting, enduring, and intuitive — places where design serves people and every detail reflects a story.
Based in Los Angeles, California, DATTER partners with clients locally and nationwide who share a belief that hospitality is not a sector — it’s a sensibility.
